Don’t Get Scammed by IRS Impersonators.

The IRS will not:

  • Initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media.
  • The IRS will not request PIN numbers, passwords or similar information related to your credit cards or financial accounts.
  • Demand immediate payment of taxes.
  • Threaten to arrest you for not paying.
  • Tell you to pay your taxes using a gift card or cryptocurrency.

If you should receive any unexpected IRS-related call:

  • Hang up right away and do not respond to any questions.
  • Block the call.
  • Call the IRS directly at 1-800-366-4484 or visit their webpage at https://www.tigta.gov/

If you should receive IRS-related email:

  • Do not reply
  • Do not open any attachments.  They can contain malicious code that may infect your computer or mobile phone.
  • Do not click on any links.
  • Forward the full email as-is to phishing@irs.gov
  • Delete the original email.

If you do owe taxes, the IRS will first contact you by mail.
